I liked the historical moment in which the story unfolded.I liked the way in which the author describes the period.
I liked the narrative.
But this is a romantic story, and...
***Spoiler***
I did NOT liked the lead characters and the writer give them a love story than seems like a cardboard. So it was no surprise the resolution came in the form of a short message our stuffy hero sent (via the maid) to our long-suffering heroine inside their own house (because speaking directly to his beloved was not a better alternative, right?). Anyway, she is overwhelmed with such "emotional" display from his part and went to search it. After half page (really!) everything is worked out and all became pure love and happiness forever and ever ...
Meh.

In short: this book is like an old Harlequin novella from the 90's on steroids. That's why there are mooooore pages, so the heroine can weep moooore tears, but will cost us mooooore money.

Lions and Lace Meagan McKinney 9780440212300 Books Reviews
Remember all those mini-series from the 80's? Well, Lions and Lace reminds me of those. I really enjoyed it. Wealthy knickerbocker Alana, with her dream of living a simple life with a man who loves her, is devoted to her sister and is a completely sympathetic heroine. Self-made man (and Irish Catholic) Trevor Sheridan grew up hard and grew up tough. He is a very Alpha male. Don't expect him to go all soft and sit around talking about his feelings. What happens in this marriage of convenience when Alana is haunted by the vows she took and wants a real connection? Can two people from very different social backgrounds make a go of it?
If you're looking for sheer escapism, great storytelling and larger than life characters, Lions and Lace is an absolute treasure. If you are looking for a lighthearted bodice-ripping tale with insipid characters that swoon when the other romantic lead enters the room, look elsewhere, perhaps to a tender regency. Set in Old New York at the height of nineteenth century class division and prejudice, Trevor Sheridan is known as The Predator on Wallstreet, striking awe in those who cannot fathom the root of his success. Towering in stature and ego, Sheridan is a darkly brooding Irishman who has clawed his way to the top to amass a fortune that makes the wealthiest Knickerbocker cringe with envy and disgust in equal measure. Against all odds, he finally has everything he ever dreamed of...everything except the respect he craves from the Knickerbockers. Enter Alana Van Alen, a spirited Knickerbocker heroine from a prominent family who unwillingly becomes Sheridan's ticket to social entree by means of matrimony and the sparks ignite from there. To prevent spoilers, I will not divulge further details.
First released 1992, it is with tremendous gratitude that I praise the team who unearthed this out of print title and made it available to new generations of readers on . The author, Meagan McKinney is a talented and thorough author who combs the alums of history to create fiction reads to die for. In Lions and Lace, Book 1 in the Van Alen series, McKinneys paints one of the finest series to hit the bookshelves. Brace yourself for sleepless nights and stolen moments throughout the day, you won't be able to cast your aside.
This is a powerful novel, not light-hearted and sweet. Trevor and Alana were not given an easy way out by the author.
As a child, Trevor Sheridan, an impoverished Irish immigrant, was immediately confronted by grinding poverty, brutality, and the scorn imposed by New York's ruling elite, the Knickerbockers. He ruthlessly clawed his way to the top of the financial world but, of course, remained a social pariah, together with his beloved family. He never forgot the thousands of insults and slights to which he and his family had been subjected...still experienced, despite his enormous wealth. That experience impacted his soul. It culminated, and the story began, with his sister's debut.
Alana Van Alen was a member of the Knickerbocker 400 so hated by Trevor, though she didn't share their harsh views and behavior. She was kind, led a sheltered, rather insulated life, but she had endured terrible tragedy and continued to suffer from a heartbreaking circumstance for which there seemed no answer.
During the course of this novel, Alana suffered considerable angst, but that doesn't describe the story. Trevor, that most complex man, was, for me, the driving force of this story. I've seldom read of a character so multi-faceted, so potent, so driven, so vulnerable, so vastly interesting.
The progression of the story was done so well, I was spellbound. Alana's gradual understanding of Trevor, of his deep love for his family, of the forces driving him, was written beautifully. His slow understanding of Alana, the despised Knickerbocker, was written thoughtfully and very well. The only thing that began to get on my nerves was Alana turning on the tears at the drop of a hat. Then again, maybe I would have blubbered too. She had been harshly thrown into an alien environment and had a lot to deal with.
The story drew me into it and didn't turn loose. Frankly, I was a little frazzled by the end of the novel. Happily, the ending was very satisfying as was the epilogue.
I've worked on this review until I'm nearly cross-eyed and I don't think I can ever do justice to this remarkable novel.
Highly recommend.
Note I subtracted .5 star because of Alana's tearfulness, but it would be unfair to not accord this novel 5 stars. It's a wonderful novel.
Enjoy your reading! )
