Pappy Jewett and his three sons, Cane. Cob and Chimney are dirt poor sharecroppers in Georgia in the year 1917. Whey pappy dies early on in the story the three boys decide to become outlaws committing a brutal murder, stealing horses and heading north to Canada blazing a trail of robbery,murder and mayhem that brings them a great deal of notice when a large reward is posted for their capture. Seeking a place to lay low when they reach Ohio they hide out at the farm of the Fiddler family, the folks not realizing that they are outlaws. In the nearby town of Meade we meet the characters of Jasper, an outhouse inspector, Lieutenant Bovard, a homosexual soldier, and Sugar, a black man who preys on women as well as several other notable characters who all play a role in this wild tale.

Donald Ray Pollock has written a story that is disgustingly violent, sexually depraved, totally racist and having said that an excellent book if you are not bothered by such things. Beware that this book is not for the feint of heart. Somehow though, given the previous comment, this book is funny as hell and I found myself laughing out loud quite often. Also, if you look past all of this there is warmth and a good side of humanity that can be found as well. This is a complex story with many sides to it and totally worth your time to read it. Somehow, given all these ingredients the ending comes to a fine conclusion. This novel is highly recommended as well as a previous title called The Devil All the Time.

I was very impressed by his previous book, Devil All the Time, and I am again impressed by this writer. He is enormously talented and courageous, able to dive deep into the darkest places of human nature, and come back up with the complex mixture of wickedness, vulnerability, corruption as well as redemption. He puts all of these facets of humanity but manages to tell an extremely clear, entertaining, intriguing story that is heavy but not stuffy, literary, but not obfuscated. How lucky we are to have a writer like him! He certainly is in a very special category of writers in our time. Thank you Dr. Pollock and please keep writing. I can hardly wait for your next book.
Right off the bat you should know this ain't another The Devil All The Time this book is by far one of my most anticipated reads in a long time. I gotta say I loved it. It's not what I was expecting but still a great story. This is a more of a main stream novel something a book club would discuss over tea and cookie and I hope it sells a bizillion copies.That being said I am a sick and twisted kinda guy when it comes to what I read and I was really wanting another sick and twisted story like Devil It feels to me like DRP got all clean cut and tried to write something his high school english teacher could read. I don't recommend Devil to everyone...just the sick folks.....but I will recommend The Heavenly Table to everybody
This is undoubtedly a great story, and gripping in the manner of narrative propulsion that fans of Donald Ray Pollock have come to expect and crave. That gut twisting dance between dying to turn away and dying to know what happens next is as compelling and irresistible as was inspired by his brilliant earlier works, and anyone who comprehends the art of storytelling will be enthralled by this latest gift.
My only sadness is that Pollack's art of turns of phrase, the diamond flash of brilliance in wordplay, has pulled the cover over its head in this one. My sense is that the author felt pressured to produce, and wasn't given adequate time to breathe his visceral way through the language the way that suits him best. This is a purely aesthetic consideration and does little to diminish the impact of a great story. But Pollock is not only a storyteller, he is a wordsmith. It's our great blessing as happy readers to have found both of these gifts together in his prior works...and, spoiled, I for one instinctively demanded this same command performance here. I was uncomfortable reading a few hackneyed phrases (that itself a hackneyed phrase) and felt often that Pollock needed more time, more breathing room, to rediscover his personal magic of expression.
Dearest Donald Ray, I would wait for your next blessing for twenty years if you need that long to rest and recharge. You are a brilliant, brutal storyteller and a bloody poet! Carve your way back into the guts of English and shock us again, one day, with the alarming and new, the vision of life and language only you, uniquely you, can bring to us!
That said, this is a freaking great story and I urge everyone with a heart to buy it now.
This was a well woven tale in the true meaning of the phrase. It follows some very colorful characters alternately and, at times, at once as the pages turn. It is an easy book to lose yourself in and you will anxiously await the fates of the characters. Speaking of characters, there is a large cast of them in this book and at least half a dozen you may become invested in. That helps because, although the story is told chronologically, it is not exactly linear. Without interesting characters, it would be very difficult to follow the story line as it moves between individuals and families. At times the language is vulgar and the sexual references and violence are crude and blunt. I wasn't offended, but if you are sensitive to any or all, this isn't the book for you. All-in-all, the book kept me interested right to the end and left me happy that I chose to read it.
I wasn't too sure about this book, but it did suck me right in. Kind of like "O Brother Where Are Thou" meets "Bonnie & Clyde". Great characters. And what I really liked was that when each character was introduced, even minor characters who would be there for five pages and then never heard from again, you'd get a whole backstory about some event in this person's life, usually some outrageous event. It's almost like a collection of short stories about these colorful individuals, all linked together by a high crime drama. Full of a lot of, shall we say, very colorful language about topics not usually discussed in polite company, at least not this frankly. It'll leave you either shocked or rolling in the aisles. Me? I loved it.
