Why Abstract Art? What inspires it? How does Art relate to broader society? How does an artist think? Can making Art be a spiritual journey?

These questions and more are explored in this combination Artist’s catalogue and diary. In this book Regan walks you through the first twelve paintings in a new series created through a unique process combining Eastern Philosophy and modern Physics. Follow along as he explores and struggles with surrendering his preconceptions and allowing internal inspiration to guide him.

“Painting got really interesting when I decided to paint nothing.”

“To put it another way, I don’t look to the external world to find subject matter. There are “no-things” that I observe and then abstract from. My subject matter is the moment-to-moment engagement between myself and the marks I make on the canvas—painting as an act of being present.”

A book that combines art with philosophical expose providing real insight into how an artist thinks and how he relates his art to the broader world.

A must read for aspiring artists and for non-artists looking to relate to, and understand, abstract art.

I absolutely loved this book. I so enjoyed the correlation between the philosophy, mysticism and physics and the actual process of creating the work of art. I loved the quotes, which I was actually familiar with and could see the relevance. I particularly enjoyed the part about the teacher commenting on his son not coloring inside the lines. In a society that sometimes gets caught up in conformity, this was striking. This may be another mind developing that thinks outside the box and sees things in a different way. I recently saw a documentary about the perception of reality, and the section relating to that was a confirming statement that this is a truth. Our eyes and minds filter out what we are not familiar and comfortable with, so we miss a lot of what is actually out there. As far as the actual art work, I love the new technique. The colors and bold lines appeal to me and I just like the general look of it. I will not read anymore into it, and try to "figure it out". That is not what it's about, IMHO. I have attached a pic of my favorite painting.

A veritable feast for the eyes, for the mind and for the soul!

This artist weaves an intellectually amusing relationship between abstract art, philosophy, and the bigger picture and scores a home run.
He creatively couples his art with wonderful quotes that illuminate and inspire . . . . leaving the reader with a freeing sense of limitless wonder.

I highly recommend this delightful book to anyone looking for an escape into reality.
It's a tall order to write a book about abstract art that's accessible, funny, insightful, and deep at the same time. This artist has done it.

I don't feel at all like this guy is trying to impress me; rather, just share his thought process - however random or revolutionary. It's a rare privilege to hear an artist talk about his work in such a transparent and real way.

If you're like me, you're a bit intimidated by abstract art. What the heck am I supposed to be doing here, anyway?! What am I supposed to be looking for? What's it all about? How do I know when I'm done?

This book makes me feel more at ease to take in art. It's liberating. I was just going to skim the book at lunch, but I ended up reading the whole thing cover to cover. It's fun and easy yet thought-provoking. I love how the quotes match up with the art pieces and the philosophical musings.

Good stuff. Time to hit some museums! ;)
I first came across Dave's work at one of the art shows in San Francisco. There were a lot of local artists showcasing their work, but Dave's style and interpretation of abstract art really caught my attention.

There’s a lot of great stuff packed into this snackable little book. Anyone looking to understand Abstract Art should give this a read!
This is a beautiful collection of both art and prose. Through his writing, Regan allows the reader to peek inside his process and his mind, which lends itself powerfully to the piece he pairs it with. A must-read for anyone who enjoys beautiful writing and art, and for those who want to feel less-alone in the creative process. Regan seamlessly threads philosophy, his process, and his work together in a way that leaves the reader fully satisfied visually and mentally.
Although I have always enjoyed abstract art this book has provided me with a greater insight to its depth and relationship to "many things" and "nothing". I was particularly impressed with artists/authors use of relationships between philosophy, physics and mythology to provide insight to abstract artist's intuitive process. As I read and observed the abstract paintings in the book I came to appreciate them more and more. Although the title is "This is No Place" the book should have a PLACE in any e-reader or book shelf of the serious art appreciator.
This is a great book for anyone looking to understand abstract art and how abstract artists approach their craft. Beautiful paintings are paired with poetic prose that gives great insight into how an artist thinks and how Regan in particular relates his artwork and art in general to the broader world. He integrates art into a bigger picture of life.

He has a fascinating approach to creating his paintings that incorporates Eastern Philosophy that I can really relate to.

I’ve enjoyed abstract art but never really understood it and this book has put me much more at ease with experiencing abstract paintings and art in general.
