The Undead In My Bed Katie MacAlister Molly Harper Jessica Sims 9781451656794 Books

I'm having a hard time reviewing this product.

The classification of this book being a Half Moon Hollow book is misleading because only one of the three stories is set in Half Moon Hollow, and frankly that story could, and should have stood on its own merit. I assumed the accompanying stories were like guest appearances by the other authors into the Half Moon Hollow world. A bad assumption on my part. I don't know if that was a publisher or an author's decision, but lumping these three stories together was a bad decision. It's like a perfectly cooked hamburger being served up on a dry, moldy bun. Just because it has a good burger doesn't make it a good sandwich. The good story does not make the bad ones look better. In fact, the good story makes the bad ones look worse by comparison.

Each of us has different taste so some might disagree with me on this, but here is a very brief synopsis on the writing styles so you can choose for yourself if the book as a whole is what you are looking for.

All three stories fall under the "paranormal" classification. From there the writing styles diverge quickly. Harper's story has a plot, and humor that is occasionally interrupted by sex. The other two stories have sex that is occasionally interrupted by a plot, and humor. That is the best way I can come up with to describe them.

My Review

Please Note this review is only for the novella UNDEAD SUBLET by Molly Harper, although it falls within an anthology with three stories. Personally I believe this novella alone makes the purchase of the anthology worth it, even if you never read the other two stories.

I love this little quirky town of Half Moon Hollow that Molly Harper has created. In this book, we meet a couple of new characters
1. Tess is a chef who has successfully run the kitchen in a very successful restaurant. It's a lot of work to run a kitchen and Tess finally broke under the strain of it all...having a nervous breakdown in the middle of the restaurant during service. As a result, she's been forced to take a month off to rest and recuperate. Without family or any other ties, she decides to visit Half Moon Hollow where her chef-mentor lives. She rents a house for a month from a lady getting a divorce.

What she doesn't realize is that the woman's newly-turned vampire husband is still living in the basement.

2. Sam...poor Sam...has gotten a raw deal. He was turned against his will and his wife left him because of it. The world may know there are vampires now, but that doesn't mean that everything is fair and legal for them. Something about being actually dead means that they've lost some rights and Sam's soon-to-be exwife is working to cash in on every single one of those unfair laws. She's NOT a nice person. The problem is....Sam still loves her and is devastated in multiple ways over what has happened.

Both these characters are stuck in these very unhappy circumstances and I loved the way that the book transitioned for the two of them. At first, they were taking it out on each other, but then they began to see each other as something more than just enemies and start to work together. It was a fun, entertaining, and creative story. I loved the way that the story line moved and evolved. It was really a great story. DEFINITELY one of my favorite from this series!!
I reviewed Molly Haper's story in this anthology, Undead Sublet.
Undead Sublet
By Molly Harper
Once again, Molly Harper does not disappoint. Tess Maitland is a chef in a high end restaurant in Chicago. She is working an enormous amount of hours, has lost weight from not eating, has bags under her eyes, no real friends and is stressed out. Work consumes her life, her ex -boyfriend is the manager which makes it not the best of work conditions. After passing out in the kitchen, she is told to take a "sabbatical". She heads to Half Moon Hollow in Kentucky for a rest for a month. She heads there because her mentor and his partner live there. Tess rents a house from Lindy Clemson, a woman going through a divorce for the month. She is told she has access to all parts of the house except the basement. Little does Tess know, she is not alone. She hears rumors that Lindy is not going through a divorce, but her husband is dead. Both were true. During the first couple of days of settling in, one night Tess hears someone in the kitchen. She goes down to investigate. She sees a man in the kitchen and clocks him with her wok. Tess finds out that the good looking "burglar" she hit is actually Sam Clemson, the future ex-husband of Lindy who just happens to be a vampire. Sam tells Tess to leave and she tells him to leave because she rented the house for a month. Next comes a series of pranks they pull on each other to get one or the other to leave. Tess goes to the local diner, The three Little Pigs where she meets Jolene, Zeb and their twins. They become friends. Along the way, Tess becomes friends with the other characters from Half moon hollow, Jane and Gabriel, Andrea and Dick Chaney. She finds about Sam's story and she returns to the house where they reach an agreement to stop the pranks. Soon Tess and Sam settle into a comfortable peace. Tess has to make a decision as the time draws near for her return to Chicago. She has found friends, a sense of belonging, a possible restaurant and maybe love. Should she return to Chicago? Tess decides to stay. She buys an abandoned restaurant, wins a contest to make Faux Type O recipes for vampires and finds love with Sam, after a few bumps in the road.
I love the writing style of author Molly Harper. Everything from her clever chapter titles, to her sense of humor when writing her characters. I am not disappointed when I read about the characters who live in Half Moon Hollow. I enjoy how she includes her characters from other books in the series. I always look forward to Ms Harper's next books in this series. Can't wait for the next one.
