I strongly recommend you read the previous books in this series (Rush of Wings and In the Blood) before reading this book. This installment picks up exactly where In the Blood leaves-off.

Dante, Heather, Annie and Von are now on the lamb. Dante's true blood vampire and the "creawdwr" Maker identities have been unveiled to some of the most crooked souls on earth and in Gehenna (land where the fallen angels dwell). He is relentlessly and violently pursued by all, including the government's non-existent Shadow Branch division, for their own nefarious reasons. There simply is no hiding place on earth or in Gehenna for Dante.

In the previous novel, Dante was kidnapped and had the mental shields that protected him from his past forcibly shattered. With no mental safeguards in place, the guilt from his involuntary hideous deeds of the past is unraveling his mind. Heather has been the one constant sanctuary for Dante, an anchor to help keep him in the present, instead of reliving nightmares of his past.

From Dante's birth, he has drifted from one foul slave owner to the next. His existence is full of tragedy and pain. Even in the face of rape and violence, Dante still has a heart of gold and never mutates into the sociopath everyone was anticipating.

I really enjoyed this installment. My only complaint is at times it was a little confusing to differentiate between all the secondary characters and keep track of the present and past. Besides that issue, this installment was a hit! The dark, fast-paced, thrilling-action and suspense kept me riveted to each page. There were some parts that were so violent and bleak; it was almost too painful to read. The story absorbed my attention so deeply, I was actually sad when the book ended. This latest installment left me with an insatiable craving for more; it's hard to believe I have to wait a whole year for the next installment.

For those wondering what genre this series falls under, I categorize it as a dark urban fantasy romance. I highly recommend this book to fellow dark urban fantasy readers and look forward to the next book Etched In Bone due out 12/2010.

I also recommend:
Sins & Shadows
Cursed to Death (Crimson Moon, Book 4)
Soul Catcher (The Outsider Series)
Scorched: The Dark Forgotten
Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, Book 1)

Beneath the Skin Book Three of The Maker Song Adrian Phoenix 9781439137291 Books Reviews

In my opinion a good book is the one that makes you forget about even your own reality and that you can't put it down until you finish it becuse you can't be focused on any other thing. That is Beneath the Skin a compelling, brilliant and amazing novel as well as the rest of the books that are part of this series. Just terrific!! I've read a lot of novels about this topic and Adrian Phoenix has become one of my favourite authors. The characters of Heather, Dante and Von are just perfect, absolutely. In this third book they're followed and prosecuted by everybody The FBI, all its secret branches, different groups of vampires and even all the Fallen angels of the universe. It was really stressful. Seriously. It was the first time that I had to look forward to know what would happen next and then go backwards again and continue reading where I left. As the other two novels of the series I read it in one day. My congratulations to the author!! Thank you very much for your brilliant work! Of course a must read, but sit tight in order not to suffer a heart attack!!
For the start of this book I can honestly say that I wasn't enjoying it as much as I wanted to, but let me tell you It gets better. So much better!
We learn more about Dante's past and things just seem to get more complicated as things go along. Horrible for the characters but immensely entertaining for the reader. Dante is no longer about to hide who he is and everyone wants a piece of him. Its up to him to struggle to stay himself and with Heather's help it just might be possible. Though the road isn't easy for them.
I'll be getting my hands on a copy of book number 4 as soon as possible.
This series has everything I like in a story. It is filled with varied and unusual characters, living side by side or at least crossing each others paths while most humans remain ignorant. Multi-tasking heroes fighting villains on all sides. The excitement is non-ceasing, at least until the main characters become exhausted and are in desperate need of rest. The romantic needs of the main characters do not become lost in the story nor do they take over the story, but slip naturally into the ongoing days of battle and strive. I find myself cheering for the good guys whenever a villain is foiled, beaten or just dead by any means. The hero, after all, is someone you just want to throw yourself in front of to shield from bullets, fire storms, and bad weather.
In this book Dante, Von, Heather, and Annie flee Seattle for New Orleans, and along the way have to face more and more government agencies gunning for them (how many are there now?) and the Fallen come fully into play.

A big plus the issues Phoenix had in books one and two of this series with rapid point of view switches and overly obtuse and cerebral character moments are now a thing of the past. Her writing overall feels more polished and clean as well, allowing Phoenix's haunting world to glimmer brighter.

I think I enjoyed this book best so far because it was the most cleanly written of the three, the complexity of the Fallen was an engaging new world, and Dante is beginning to awaken to his powers as the half-vampire/half-Fallen. Heather even gets some brand new skills.

Of course the story isn't over yet, but the ending is bittersweet, bringing us needed closure and asses we'd like to see kicked in the next installment. The challenge the author faces is in introducing so many adversaries for Dante and Heather, can the reader keep track?
